Avon Valley

To break up our time in and around Perth we headed back out into the countryside along the Avon valley. The Avon River is more like a brook than a River but the region is very picturesque.

Our first overnight stop was at the small village of Beverley. The Avon valley is on the western edge of the massive WA wheat belt.

...
There are sheep...
...
There is canola and sheds...
...
and there is canola and rocks...

There is also lots of wheat but that makes boring photos.

We went hunting wildflowers with some success.

Beverley is a quaint farming village 123km east of Perth. The town's murals are impressive.

The buildings hint of a long prosperous histroy...

From Beverley we drove along the Avon Valley through York and Northam and finally to Toodyay (Pronounced To-jay).

...

The village of York continues the theme of quaint rural idylls.

The giant gum nuts of the Mottlecah Mallee. The largest gum nuts of any trees in Oz.

Back on the road to Northam and back into the canola.

...
...
...
...

Notham is bigger and less quaint but they do have the only white swans breeding area in Australia.

...
...
...
...
...

Finally on to Toodyay where we have booked a three day stay at a Caravan Park in a bushland setting. The weidiest park we stayed in for a while but the place is a haven for birds.

With wet weather around and getting worse there was an urgency in the wildflower hunting.

And for bonus points Jenelle spoted a Thorny Devil lurking in the undergrowth.

Toodyay is a great little town on the banks of the Avon River with an outstanding Bakery.
