Fremantle is at the mouth of the Swan River. It was orginally a port city and still is today. It has some wonderful old archtecture and a bohemian vibe.
First stop in Fremantle is to the Fremantle Markets. Not the fresh food aladins cave we had expected. More a flea market selling the usual suspects.
Some gourmet food but very few and far between.
Then off for a wander around the old town in between downpours of rain.
We worked our way down to the fishing boat harbour as the clouds became increasingly menancing.
We found a fish and chip shop and had lunch amongst the large aquariums stocked with both potential menu items and pretty marine animals. Photographing aquariums is difficult because of the reflections. Jenelle has been practicing a technique to remove the worst of the reflections.
Then around the corner to the mouth of the Swan River to see the old and the new port.
The original fortifications, time keeping ball and cannon. At 1.00pm each day the canon was fired and the ball dropped for the ships in port to update their clocks.

The southern side of the port,the old warehouses have been redeveloped into a tourist and retail presinct. To their credit the redevelopment has retained the original buidlings.
The Fremantle port was the entry port for many Australian Immigrates. This statue commenorates the childen who arrived from Britian during the Second World War. Many were subjected to horrible physical and sexual abuse by locals and the clergy.
